In January 2018, Wexford Pantomime Society presented Cinderella for their 50th Anniversary Pantomime, having been the first pantomime the group produced back in 1968. A fitting show for what is often described as the ultimate pantomime. This beautiful, traditional retelling of the most popular love story of all time was given the society’s trademark energy, humour and Wexford flavour, making it a standout production in the group’s history.

The story followed Ella, better known as Cinderella, who found herself trapped in the familiar predicament of living under the rule of her cruel Stepmother and two Ugly Sisters, Griselda and Amnesia. Despite their bullying, Ella had loyal friends to support her, including the ever-faithful Buttons and the mischievous house cat Pippa, who added comic fun and warmth to the story.

Meanwhile, in the palace, Prince Will Charming was preparing for a magnificent royal ball. For Ella, this was the chance of a lifetime — but how could she ever hope to attend? With a little help from her Fairy Godmother, and the not-always-reliable trainee fairy Glitter Knicks, Ella’s path to the ball was paved with magic, mishaps and plenty of laughter.

The production balanced the timeless elements of Cinderella — the glass slipper, the midnight deadline, and the dream of true love — with lively new twists and memorable characters, such as the Prince’s Royal Aides - Sid, Barny and Benjamin. Audiences were treated to a fast-paced, high-energy script full of music, comedy, dazzling costumes and a few unexpected surprises along the way.

As ever, the performance captured the essence of pantomime: romance, laughter, chaos, audience participation, as well as some easter eggs for those who have been Wexford Panto-goers for years, with appearances from previous Panto characters such as Tiger Lily, Mother Goose, Puss in Boots and Dorothy to mention but a few. The show also marked the final appearance of the legendary Seán Meyler who introduced and concluded the show as the Magical Curator. The show also featured a cameo from Fintan O’Leary who played Buttons in the 1968 production of Cinderella.

With its mix of tradition and originality, Cinderella in 2018 proved to be true “panto gold,” delighting audiences young and old and securing its place as one of the Society’s most cherished productions.
